Treating industrial wastewater: an overview

Every industry and every business has different requirements when it comes to treating its wastewater. Whilst the process might differ slightly for each, it generally works in two stages: cleansing and filtration. 

Stage 1: cleansing 

The first stage of the process removes any large solid materials from the industrial wastewater.  This can be done through screenings and through sedimentation, where the solid waste is collected at the bottom of the container. 

Grit chambers can be used to filter dust and debris from the water, whereas coagulants clump debris together, making it easier to collect from the bottom of the tank. Aqua Advice treatment plants use organic or inorganic coagulants to do this. 

Stage 2: filtration

The second stage involves filtering out any waste molecule larger than a water molecule. This  can be achieved by disinfecting with chlorine or ultraviolet rays, or through reverse osmosis. Aqua Advice developed an innovative method of removing sulphates using reverse osmosis, allowing the water to be reused.
